Eucalypt plantations only successful as pulpwood tree farms? Bullshit!

The Australian Government statutory corporation RIRDC (Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation) has just released a new publication on Eucalyptus timber production that should be of interest for public and private investors in all those areas of the world where the Australian trees have become an important forestry resource.

Innovative farmers and forestry enterprises down under in Australia and New Zealand have been consistently proving for a time that eucalypts, these highly diverse trees by number of species, growth habits, yield of products or externalities, are also a source of diversity in what to sustainable forestry management and tree farms and their products refers.

Currently, examples of Eucalyptus plantations managed under mixed timber production management plans (aiming for instance to a combination of pulpwood plus solid wood) spread through countries in four continents, in many cases contributing to the diversification of timber productive units within technified farms following agroforestry principles. When properly designed and implemented, they can become a very clever and successful way to integrate tree farming in overal farming schemes, and it is especially in these cases when the concepts of polyculture, sustainable forestry, multiple production, high quality and value timber, silvopastoralism, farm forestry and organic farming become directly involved with Eucalyptus. As with many other types of trees.

The Australian and some of the New Zealander state of the art experience in this wonderful type of Eucalyptus tree farming has been put together at the Plantation Eucalypts for High Value Timber 2007 Conference, where experts from industry, academic research, governmental agencies, forestry management companies and farm forestry investors offered their latest findings, which have now taken the form of these proceedings.

Speakers include well renowned international and national experts as Vince Erasmus (ITC Forestry Ltd), Clinton Tepper (Woollybutt Pty Ltd), Peter Volker (Forestry Tasmania, CRC for Forestry), David Quill (Eumeralla Pty Ltd), Russell Washusen (CSIRO-Ensis), Tony Cannon (Forest Enterprises Australia Pty Ltd), Trevor Innes (FEA Timber Pty Ltd), Martin Grealy (Forests NSW), David Bush (CSIRO-Ensis), Craig Taylor (The Fifth Estate Consultancy Pty Ltd), and Rodney Keenan (The University of Melbourne).

We wish you a happy reading!!

Hi.

I see some interesting books on Eucalyptus. Are there any written in English? , or in Spanish? I can write and read in both languages, but the language used in your books apparently is Portuguese.

Many members here would be interested in English versions.

Thanks.

Jaime.

Hello Jaime :)

Some of the books you see referenced from our site are "local products" of research at this side of the pond (estamos en España :)), edited some times in Spain, some in Portugal and mostly originally aiming to local readership, but most of the material you can find through Eucalyptologics coming from our good friend Celso Foelkel in Brazil is, if not already , sooner or later going to be translated into English. The newsletters already have an English version, and the book chapters are originally written in Portuguese, but translated into English as time permits.

Besides this, you can also find some Australian references, which of course are already produced in English. And our main choice to publicise every article on Eucalyptologics is already English. We cannot aim to reference all available literature on Eucalyptus (too many pages have been written on them and it would take a lifetime to list them all!), but to point out recent publications on Eucalyptus cultivation that can be of interest from varied angles. We try to point the readers towards online resources or free download quality works, but some of the books are yet only in a paper format, and you'd need to get them from the editors or publishers to read them.

Your knowledge of Spanish can greatly help you to read any original version in Portuguese properly. Portuguese is an important language in the world of Eucalyptus, Portugal has grown them for +150 years, and Brazil has become one of the World Eucalyptus Superpowers after the first successful industrial scale gum tree timber crops started by Navarro de Andrade more or less at the same time the failure to develop an Eucalyptus based industry in California happened over 100 years ago. They were some of the pioneers, and inspired many other countries for its cultivation in the Americas :)

Hi Gus.
You are right, I just glanced at some literature in Portuguese and at least in written form it is similar to Spanish. I can read it.
Algunos libros deben haber sido traducidos a Español no? How can I get some names of books , Portuguese and Spanish, so I can purchase a couple?
Perhaps there is a way to get in touch with Celso Foelkel. Very interesting.
Your site is very informative, thanks for such a nice site.

I think there would be too many books to read, but much of what you can read could be of little direct impact for your idea of planting some eucalypts in Peru. Which does not mean at all it would be non interesting literature.

But I also think you should at least try to get more specific, and maybe a good start is getting to read these 14 pages (if you can send me a copy then it would be great!):

Dickinson, J.C. (1969) The Eucalypt in the Sierra of Southern Peru. Annals of the Association of American Geographers, Vol. 59, No. 2, pp. 294-307

Sadly, many of the best general works on Eucalyptus are now classics, out of print for years. I have been collecting them for years :) The one you have recently received (Forest Trees of Australia) is one of the lucky cases of continued reprinting for decades because it got popular, as it is somewhat a "guide of trees". Its first edition is from 1957 (I have one and it as just some 200 pages :)). This all means the main sources of these general treatises ("more than a guide of trees") might be good libraries. Where you can also find articles as the one above ;)

But for you to also have a good start, let's be thankful to the good people working from Rome, and give a look at this nice resource :)

Hi Gus.

I am trying to get a copy of that article, I wrote to the site to see if they will allow me to do so. I will get you a copy if I get it.

I just purchased a book through Barnes & Noble. It is written by a couple of Chinese guys, Daping Xu , and another one I can not remember, 2 authors. The name is

"Eucalyptus Plantations, Research, Management and Development"

I got one for the lowest price I could bargain for after checking in various book sellers. I will let you guys know about it once I get it.

I am very much interested. Not only about Peru's coast, I am also looking into some land in partnership with my brothers in the rainy side of the Andes, the east side (facing the Amazon). I am also interested in propagating Eucalyptus trees as city trees. I plan to complement what I read in your very informative site with this book.

I am also going to hunt for classic, out of print Eucalyptus books and studies.

Stay tuned.

Jaime, that book is not a bad choice at all, but it mostly focuses on the Chinese case :-) It is a compilation of scientific papers submitted by international authors participating in a symposium on Eucalyptus cultivation that happened in Guangdong by 2002. So, they are the proceedings of that scientific meeting.

"Eucalyptus Plantations, Research, Management and Development" (Wei & Xu, Eds., 2003)

I have had the luck to get to know some of these guys in past years, and also Dr. Wei, the other editor of this book.

It is an excellent work displaying a good deal of information on Eucalyptus cultivation in SE Asia. But most of it is technical literature, be prepared :D

Hi Gus.

Seems like it will be interesting reading. Good way to learn about the terminology of Eucalyptus plantations, can't wait.

I will keep you posted.
