Harvesting and Extracting Eucalyptus Seed from Specimen Trees: The Basics

We had discussed elsewhere that it is possible to find an Eucalyptus tree having at once flower buds in formation, blooming flowers, pollinated but yet immature capsules, fruits reaching maturity within the same year of collection, and older capsules of at least the previous two seasons. Today EUCALYPTOLOGICS brings you a pictorial example of this in which several of these stages are easily visible at once.

Eucalyptus seed capsules, flower buds, immature seed pods, mature seed pods, senescent seed pods, capsule collection and seed extraction methodology / Semilla de eucalipto, flor de eucalipto, capsulas inmaduras de eucalipto, capsulas maduras de eucalipto, capsulas extramaduras de eucalipto y metodos para cosecha de semilla de eucalipto / Eucalyptus pauciflora seed / Snow Gum Seed / Semilla de Eucalipto de las Nieves / GIT Forestry Consulting, Consultoria y Servicios de Ingenieria Agroforestal, Lugo, Galicia, Spain, España, Europe, EuropaFig. 1: Different simultaneous stages of the reproductive cycle and seed maturation process in a standing Snow Gum Eucalyptus tree.(Click to enlarge)

This matters for Eucalyptus seed collection methodologies, both at capsule harvest and seed extraction stages.

Capsule Harvest in Eucalyptus: Specimen Trees
  • If performed via whole branch removal, it should focus on targeting those branches bearing noticeable amounts of mature capsules (normally brownish and woody, but not yet open). Thus, branch selective Eucalyptus seed harvest.
  • If performed via whole branch removal, it should aim to reatain some of those branches bearing noticeable amounts of flower buds in development or immature capsules (normally greenish and not yet fully woody). This way further Eucalyptus seed crops are possible in the next year and new pollinated flowers can develop into capsules for subsequent years. Thus, sustainable Eucalyptus seed harvest.

Seed Extraction in Eucalyptus: Aim to the Best Seed

If performed via whole branch removal, harvest of some amounts of senescent and immature Eucalyptus capsules ("seed pods") and some flower buds might be inevitable. In such cases, some implications for seed quality can have importance because germination rates are not the same for seed contained in each type of capsule.
  • Grouping senescent (already open valves, some seed yet in) and mature (brownish, woody, not yet open capsules) capsules for Eucalyptus seed extraction yields germplasm with the highest potential for good germination rates. Even if both seed and chaff are present, the number of mature seeds per weight of seed and chaff mix is higher in these. Thus, higher purity seed mix.
  • Separating non mature capsules (greenish, non totally woody, valves closed) for seed extraction can give you an indication of the purity of the Eucalyptus seed mix in these cases, which would be variable depending on harvest date. In some cases, after extraction and seed depuration (removal of non fertilised ovules or chaff, plus removal of fertilised but not yet mature hence non germinant seeds) can still yield a little extra % of high purity seed.
  • Eucalyptus flower buds, blooming flowers and recently pollinated flowers have no interest from the point of view of seed harvest, but if in the right phase (anthesis), some of these could be worthwile for pollen collection.

Biology Professor and Students Discover
Record Eucalyptus Tree in
Cal Poly Canyon

SAN LUIS OBISPO -- California Polytechnic State University's Biology Professor Matt Ritter and three of his students recently discovered what is thought to be the tallest Karri Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus diversicolor) tree in North America.

Ritter, a biology professor and head of the Cal Poly Plant Conservatory, spotted the massive tree in Poly Canyon in 2005. But it wasn’t until late November 2007 that he and graduate students Jenn Yost and Chris Wassenberg, along with undergraduate Justin Bence, were able to climb to the top of the giant tree to measure it.

Environmentalist Scam on Eucalyptus Certification

SPECIAL REPORT: The environmentalist scam of removing ecofriendly status to certified eucalypts

EUCALYPTOLOGICS has just unexpectedly received an impressive document on Sustainable Forestry Management topics in relation to Eucalyptus timber crops in Spain along with a suggestion for it to be first published online through us. As neutral observers we are not too keen to put into the air every piece of information we get from varied sources, especially if falling into polemics. But as firm believers in freedom of speech, we are not going to apply censorship to these opinions even if we do not fully endorse them. Not when they are loaded of this fine irony!

For those wondering, it is some sort of reply to a recent article entitled "El engaño de los eucaliptos con sello ambiental", which could translate as "The scam of environmentally friendly certified eucalypts", published by the online journal SOITU.ES some days ago.

The document was submitted to us in Spanish language only and we are presently trying to contact back the author in order to get permission to translate it into a suitable English version. It is entitled "El engaño ambiental de retirar un sello verde a los eucaliptos", which could translate as "The environmentalist scam of removing ecofriendly status to certified eucalypts". We add it below here now in full length.
