The works of Navarro de Andrade set the scenario for the first successful example of large scale industrial Eucalyptus cultivation, starting a thread that would be repeated or attempted during the 20th century in more than 95 countries around the world.
- 1 = Edmundo Navarro de Andrade (Sao Paulo, 1881-1941) graduated from the Agronomy School of Coimbra (Portugal) in 1903 and back home was hired by Paulista Railways to establish its first timber tree orchard at Jundiaí. He achieved several public servant positions related to agriculture, was part of many Study Commissions involving agricultural missions overseas, travelling around the world on behalf of the Federal Government of Brazil and the Government of the State of Sao Paulo. He published several works, mostly on subjects related to Eucalyptus cultivation.
- 2 = Augusto Jeronimo Martini is a BSc in Geography, UNESP - Río Claro; MSc in Social History, USP; and is undertaking his PhD in Social Story by the USP.
O livro Edmundo Navarro de Andrade – o plantador de eucaliptos e a questão da preservação florestal no Brasil de Augusto Jeronimo Martini, busca resgatar a memória histórica, documental e científica de Edmundo Navarro de Andrade, cientista contratado pela Companhia Paulista de Estradas de Ferro do Estado de São Paulo, em 1904, para encontrar a espécie florestal que mais bem se prestaria ao fornecimento de carvão para as locomotivas e madeira para os dormentes das ferrovias.
"Atualmente, a Floresta Estadual Edmundo Navarro de Andrade possui a maior variedade de espécies de eucalipto do Brasil, o que a torna referência no cultivo e pesquisa da planta e a faz conhecida como berço do eucalipto", destaca o autor.
Augusto Jeronimo Martini possui graduação em Geografia, pelo Instituto de Geociências e Ciências Exatas da Unesp de Rio Claro, e mestrado em História Social pela USP. Atualmente é doutorando em História Social pela USP.
Edmundo Navarro de Andrade (São Paulo, 02/01/1881 – 01/12/1941). Estudou na Escola Nacional de Agricultura de Coimbra (Portugal), onde se diplomou em 1903. De regresso ao Brasil, foi encarregado pela Companhia Paulista de Estradas de Ferro de organizar o seu primeiro horto florestal, em Jundiaí. Ocupou vários cargos públicos na área agrícola, participando de muitas comissões de estudos no exterior em missão dos governos Federal e de São Paulo, e também da Companhia Paulista de Estradas de Ferro, tendo percorrido, em longas viagens, grande parte do mundo. Publicou vários títulos, a maioria deles sobre a cultura do eucalipto.
