Natural regeneration in Eucalyptus (1): E. delegatensis

Share

After timber harvest, mixed with bark and branch debris, seed capsules of Eucalyptus delegatensis (and also pine cones from a nearby Pinus pinaster stand) release their seed load. A small percent of these will germinate and new plants will colonise the area. We see then natural regeneration from seed.

Some months after aerial part removal another type of natural regeneration common in Eucalyptus species will start to show up too. From buds in the basal area of the stump new coppice shoots emerge. Two types of regeneration (seed and coppice) and two generations (original specimens and their progeny) of trees will coexist in the same space in the near future.
