Brazil leads... the world should follow!
What is a Tree? - A video message from Bracelpa, the Brazilian Pulp & Paper Association, to the COP15 (United Nations Climate Change Conference, Copenhagen 2009)
Maybe the time has come to stop seeing one of the best ever made approaches to sustainable forestry as a problem-maker... and start seeing it as a world-leading effort towards sustainable production and one of the most efficient man-made tree based bio-industries.
A hectare of eucalypt cultivated forests can be up to 6 times more efficient sequestering carbon than other alternatives for a given time-span. (Bracelpa: Planted Forests, Vital Allies of the Planet)
Maybe the time has come to see sustainably managed planted forests like those of Brazil, a productive use of land, as an useful aid to increase carbon uptakes... and make them be part of the solution.
Maybe the time has come to see timber crops as one of the highest yielders of current and future positive externalities within the available options for a productive use of land.
During the last 35 years the Brazilian Pulp & Paper Industry has jumped from 51 to 85% for renewable energy over total energy consumption. (Bracelpa: Planted Forests, Vital Allies of the Planet)
Maybe the time has come to start seeing the eucalypt based pulp and paper industry as a global timber-fueled bio-refinery industry able to sustainably manage the land base that yields renewable and recyclable materials we all use everyday at once that walks towards zero fossil fuel generated carbon emissions.
Maybe the time has come to see what a tree is. What a tree can give. If used wisely.

ReplyDeleteHi Gustavo! I really loved your blog because of all the important information available there, congratulations!!! I learned more important stuff from my own country, and its crucial role against world's deforestation. By the way, you speak Portuguese very well!

Thanks to fast growing trees (Eucalyptus + Pinus mean +90% timber harvests) Galician Planted Forests sequester +14 Million Ton CO2 per year.
ReplyDeleteJan 15th 2010: Uruguayan Banco Republica (BROU) & Japanese Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation signed deal to promote Carbon Credit trade. Uruguay has developed +650,000 hectares of Eucalyptus timber crops in the last 20 years, becoming the 5th largest Eucalyptus grower in the world.
