Obama Praises the Brazilian Amazon Fund

President Barack Obama arrived in Oslo early this morning on his journey to receive the Nobel Prize for Peace.

Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg welcomed Obama to Norway by means of a working breakfast with views towards Oslo's skyline before thanking him for and urging him three times to keep moving forward in the global fight against climate change as an investment for future world peace.

The U.S. President acknowledged his presence in Copenhagen next week for the United Nations Climate Change Conference would be an important step for a truly global strategy in this sense.

After remembering the bond between both countries through the huge Norwegian-American community back home, Obama praised the joint initiative of the governments of Norway and Brazil to monitor and try to minimise deforestation rates in the Amazon Basin.

Norway has become one of the main financial investors in the preservation of one of the largest remaining virgin forests of the world through a yearly 100 million US$ contribution to the Amazon Fund, a piece of the National Plan on Climate Change launched by Lula last year aiming to keep reducing deforestation rates. The amount of non released carbon stored by preserving the Amazonian forest with this contribution is expected to equate 10 times all Norwegian emissions.

The Brazilian approach for forest preservation via stopping deforestation is parallel with a reduction of pressure on its native forests for industrial timber procurement. Suitable areas in the South and East of the country have become part of industrial tree crop polyculture systems using mosaic silviculture designs. These involve the sustainable management of fast growth timber plantations surrounded by interlinked ecological corridors that aim to preserve the basic functions of native ecosystems within those areas scheduled for a predominant timber productive function.

"Prime Minister Stoltenberg and I also discussed how we can work together and with other countries to protect forests -- something that he has personally championed and I'm very impressed with the model that has been built between Norway and Brazil that allows for effective monitoring and ensures that we are making progress in avoiding deforestation of the Amazon.

And we all understand that it's probably the most cost-effective way for us to address the issue of climate change -- having an effective set of mechanisms in place to avoid further deforestation and hopefully to plant new trees."
