"Plus tree : a phenotype judged, but not yet proven by progeny test, to be unusually superior in some quality or qualities such as an exceptional growth rate relative to the site, desirable growth habit, high wood quality, exceptional apparent resistance to disease and insect attack or to other adverse locality factors."

Nieuwenhuis, M. (2000) Terminology of Forest Management Planning. IUFRO World Series, Vienna.

"Genetic gains derived from the incorporation of tree genetic improvement criteria to silvicultural management at stand level have been too much overlooked. The potential is tremendous and this incorporation is the fastest way to obtain a significant level of genetic improvement. Besides those activities directly related to regeneration, which automatically include harvest operations, the best way to apply genetics to silviculture is through those process of thinning, pruning and, less impacting, fertilisation. Thinning especially is the most suitable way to obtain quick applied genetic results.

The most common mistake of practical forestry around the world is to establish or let grow without intervention to harvest age tree stands in conditions of excessive stocking per surface unit. Insufficient spacing is one of the main limiting factors for tree growth, and in such a way its genetic potential cannot be expressed completely. Consequently, dasonomic practices involving thinning are essential tools if a maximum of genetic gain is to be obtained from improved tree strains. There is a question that will always be recurrent: Which is the optimal spacing for each tree species and location? But the base idea to answer that question will always be recurrent aswell: that one giving enough room for a tree to grow and express its potential to the fullest."

Scientists of Umeå University at Sweden have located the oldest Christmas Tree in the World. A 9,550 year old Norway spruce (Picea abies) in the Dalarna province of Sweden has shown to be a tenacious survivor that has endured by Growing on the Edge of the ice cap between erect trees and smaller bushes in pace with the dramatic climate changes over time.

Depending on the concept we keep of a tree this spruce dated via radiocarbon could be one of the fair contenders to the title of "Oldest living tree in the World".

Our friend Dan at 10000 Trees however compilates the case of Pando tree growing at Fish Lake National Forest in central Utah (USA), also known as The Trembling Giant, a clonal colony of Quaking Aspen (Populus tremuloides) estimated (or claimed by some to be) 80,000 years old and formed by +45,000 genetically identical trunks that share the same massive root system spread over 47 hectares.

And what is this story doing in EUCALYPTOLOGICS, an Eucalyptus related weblog? Well, it is just an introduction to...

The oldest living Eucalyptus found in Australia
(stay tuned!)

Eucalyptus Pulp & Paper in Spain: towards sustainability

Share

A couple of weeks ago ASPAPEL (Asociación Española de Fabricantes de Pasta, Papel y Cartón) made public the Second Edition of a Sustainability Report (PDF, 5.2 MB) summarising the state-of-the-art for the Pulp & Paper industrial chain in Spain for the triennium 2004-2006.

This report is the result of a Public Consultation Process involving not just the Spanish Pulp & Paper Industry but also representative stakeholders concerned by sustainability as governmental agencies, large paper consumers, landowners, trade unions, non governmental organisations and universities, whose proposals and concerns have been incorporated into the current edition or have positively contributed to the addition of new criteria & indicators for a better monitoring of the sector within the frame of this ongoing participatory process.

The opinions and contributions made during the Consultation Process were assessed, validated and verified as accurate and relevant by Bureau Veritas Certification, an independent third party with the role of securing neutrality of all contributions and providing a guarantee of transparency and traceability for the information and data processed.

Many of the macro-magnitudes presented in this report throw some light on key points for Spanish Pulp & Paper Industry Sustainability, as size of timber resources and timber sourcing rates, employment statistics for supply chains, sustainability of forest management practices, positive externalities derived from carbon sink effects, greenhouse gas emissions at mills, water & chlorine use, progresses with ISO & EMAS environmental management systems at industrial processes, residues and subproducts of pulp and paper-making, fibre recycling and a long etc.

EUCALYPTOLOGICS' staff frequently receives inquiries from concerned citizens worldwide about the sustainability of Eucalyptus cultivated forests wondering if the information provided by some media and some of the commonly spread general knowledge are accurate enough. It has been estimated there are some 300 myths on Eucalyptus cultivation that do not resist a logical examination or should at least be put into quarantine status.

Due to the insistence of one of our worried readers, there it goes a first batch of commented macro-magnitudes (facts) in a group of seven.

We are firmly convinced a good amount of myth propagators are just missinformed individuals with a narrow view of forestry in general and the interconnections of forestry, environment, industry and ecology in particular.

EUCALYPTOLOGICS must contribute to a proper dissemination of sound information and to the education of general audience on these important topics no matter if at local, regional, national or global scale. And renewable, recyclable and sustainable primary resources as Eucalyptus timber is can achieve the category of strategic from many standpoints. Our overpopulated greenish Gaia needs of a wise use of its finite resources to support itself in the long term or it will perish.

Eucalyptus regeneration: tips & tricks for potted plants

GIT Forestry Consulting - Consultoría y Servicios de Ingeniería Agroforestal - www.git-forestry.com - EUCALYPTOLOGICS

We have previously seen in EUCALYPTOLOGICS a good number of examples of Eucalyptus regeneration at their natural habitats in Australia, timber plantations overseas and garden designs using these plants. Today we re-visit this topic from an angle that can be useful for those growers having overgrown potted eucalypts. A new outlook for those plants can be achieved taking advantage of Eucalyptus stubborness to survive.

Advantages of Recycling Potted Eucalyptus
  • A new outlook can be developed for specimens with poor form, signs of damage in their aerial part or having an aesthetic attractive below average
  • Can help assess comparative coppice vigour for different species, varieties or provenances, many of which are rare in cultivation
  • Growth rates can be faster than from seed to seedling since root systems are already formed
  • Allows further decisions once re-shooting is ongoing as formation pruning, bonsaification or shape sculpture
  • Forces the plant to produce new shoots of juvenile foliage, which can be interesting if this is the main ornamental feature
  • Keeps a door open to future annual or biannual severe pruning, starting over as the plants gain more size than desired in order to keep them as smaller potted specimens for display or as indoor plants

Disadvantages of Recycling Potted Eucalyptus
  • More suitable for specimens having already developed a lignotuber, albeit this is not always necessary
  • More suitable for fast growing Eucalyptus species, and better if juvenile leaf shapes are an important ornamental feature
  • Too old potted plants may be rootbound and might require root pruning and transplanting to bigger pots for this technique to yield best results
  • In most cases root quality is inferior in the long term compared to potted plants grown directly from seed to seedling and needing no coppicing, especially if these are grown using root air pruning techniques
  • Coppice timing must match appropriate seasonal conditions: plants need light, warm temperature and abundance of water and nutrients to rebuild... but pruning risks must be minimised
  • Coppice results are variable from specimen to specimen within the same plant lot, shape homogeneity is difficult to achieve sistematically without intensive observation and frequent interventions
  • Nutrient availability can be low or exhausted in an old potting mix, making a proper fertilisation/fertirrigation regime necessary

Nursing Eucalyptus: from Seed to Seedling

Share

365 days in the life of a baby Eucalyptus
Or how to check your gum trees are doing fine at nursery

EUCALYPTOLOGICS frequently receives inquiries from amenity growers and horticulturalists around the world wanting to experiment with Eucalyptus at nursery stage in their homes or gardens. Eucalyptus propagation is relatively easy compared to other plant types, and quite rewarding with a minimum of care. But when doing it for a first time it is always nice to have some aid to know if things are going okay!

Eucalyptus gunnii cultivation at nursery, a photographic timeline by Ashley Peace in the UK at Treeblog / Cultivo de eucalipto de la sidra en vivero, resumen fotografico en el Reino Unido por Ashley Peace en Treeblog / GIT Forestry Consulting, Consultoría y Servicios de Ingeniería Agroforestal, Galicia, España, Spain / Eucalyptologics, information resources on Eucalyptus cultivation around the world / Eucalyptologics, recursos de informacion sobre el cultivo del eucalipto en el mundo
We bring you today a pictorial summary of early growth at nursery stage for a commonly grown cold hardy Eucalyptus species in the British Isles: the Cider Gum or Eucalyptus gunnii. It is courtesy of Ashley Peace and his Treeblog, yet another high quality information resource on forestry, science and trees delivered online.

We are of the opinion this and other time sequences on tree growing at nursery stage posted at Treeblog could be of aid to those starting at tree propagation or trying Eucalyptus growing for a first time.

Eucalyptus propagation from seed at industrial scale follows the same basic logical steps depicted above. It simply needs refining several processes with the aid of specific technology to increase efficiency and reduce timeframes in order to match operational planting schedules.

In addition, after some 50 years of formal breeding and domestication, industrial scale vegetative propagation of Eucalyptus at clonal nurseries (rooted cuttings of elite stock) and/or laboratories (micropropagation of advanced breeding generations) has become increasingly common and contributes to a more efficient and sustainable timber production at cultivated Eucalyptus forests around the world.
